The Distance Formula Distance formula is the formula used to measure the distance between any two points on a coordinate plane. On the coordinate plane, points are plotted using the X axis and the Y-axis and the distance formula is very useful in finding the distance between any two points on the plane. Let any two points on the coordinate plane be (x1, y1) and (x2, y2), then the distance between these points is given as: d = [(x2 x1)2 + (y2 y1)2]. Example 1: What is the distance between the points A(1, 2) and B(1, 5)? The distance formula is: d = [(x2 x1)2 + (y2 y1)2] Here given point A= (x1, y1)= (1, 2) and point B= (x2, y2)= (1, 5) In order to find the distance between points A and B, we use the distance formula. Distance, AB= [(1 1)2+ (5 2)2] = [(0 + (3)2] Now we get, distance AB= 9= 3 Therefore the distance between points A and B is 3 units. What is it Like To Go To a Women's College The following piece was written by Cassie Kosarek. Cassie is a Philadelphia tutor for Varsity Tutors and 2012 graduate of Bryn Mawr College. When the inevitable question came up during my undergraduate years So where do you go? my answer was often met with disbelief followed by looks suggesting I was crazy. Bryn Mawr, one of the Seven Sisters. Its a small womens college outside of Philadelphia. Why, whoever I was talking to wanted to know, would I ever choose an all-girls school? Did my parents push me into it? Did I know when I was applying? Id quickly correct womens college, not all-girls school and state that my decision to go to Bryn Mawr was entirely my choice. Bryn Mawr, like many other womens colleges in the United States, was founded at a time when the idea that women are worth educating was novel. The original Seven Sisters Wellesley, Mount Holyoke, Smith, Barnard, Radcliffe, Vassar, and Bryn Mawr were formed as sister schools to the Ivy League universities and boasted the strict admissions criteria and academic rigor of their all-male counterparts. The colleges sent a powerful message that women not only have the same intellectual capacity as men, but that, by having the same caliber of education as men, they were also fit to serve in traditionally masculine spheres, such as law, medicine, and business. The conversation surrounding womens colleges today often circles around the relevance of such institutions in the post-suffrage, post-womens rights era. If women are equal by law, then what does a single-sex education say about that legal equality? What is the use of instilling a feminist bent if weve already come so far? Why be exclusionary of men? To answer these questions, I look no further than our immediate socioeconomic climate. According to psychologist Derald Wing Sue, the U.S. is a country where, despite the fact that there are slightly more women in higher education than men, white men still occupy 80% of tenured positions in higher education; 80% of the House of Representatives; 80-85% of the U.S. Senate; 92% of Forbes 400 executive CEO-level positions; 90% of public school superintendents; [and] 99.9% of athletic team owners. Couple these statistics with Elizabeth Tidballs 1980 publication that found that graduates of womens colleges were twice as likely as their peers to be recognized for career accomplishments (and these results have been replicated time and again), and you can find an easy argument for the continued relevance of womens colleges. But what is it like actually attending a womens college? Like President of Barnard College, Debora Spar, stated in a March 2012 interview with the New York Times, I found that being in a womens college allowed me to find my own academic and professional voice in a context in which the social history of my gender didnt preclude me of any opportunity. At Bryn Mawr, I basked in the shadow of notable alumnae like Candace Pert, the neuroscientist who discovered the opiate receptor in the brain; Drew Faust, the first female president of Harvard; and modernist poet Marianne Moore. I watched the statistic that womens colleges graduate more women in the hard sciences and math than coed institutions come to life. I agreed with alumna Alice Baker, who wrote that it never occurred to her to not do something because of her gender, and worked alongside other undergraduates who, during their time at Bryn Mawr, would start charities, publish academic research papers, double major in Math and Spanish , and gain admission to MBA, MD, JD, PhD, and various Masters programs. Ive heard a number of college applicants say that though they like the academic and professional statistics coming out of womens colleges, they dont think they could handle the social environment. I agree that an all-womens environment is not for everyone and that the college experience provided for by these institutions will undoubtedly be much different than what you will find at a large, coed university. But Ill also point out that many womens colleges exist in an academic consortium with coed schools (Bryn Mawr is in the Quaker Consortium with the University of Pennsylvania, Haverford College, and Swarthmore College), and that, from what Ive experienced, leaves no lack of normal social life among the students. Is it harder to meet men? Yes and no. Unlike coed schools, you dont live alongside men, so meeting a guy who lives on your floor isnt going to happen. But as far as meeting men in classes (both on and off your campus, if youre in a consortium), at parties, and through stude nt clubs and activities, a little effort to introduce yourself will go a long way. I never found the social environment at my womens college to be stunted in any way. Instead, I happily found myself surrounded by other motivated women who were unwilling to compromise their goals because of detrimental social stereotypes or expectations. Ive found graduates of womens colleges to be part of a unique, empowered club dedicated to social change and equality, forever striving to improve upon the academic, professional, and social advancements of past graduates. I credit the attitude instilled by my womens college, which champions ability over self-doubt, with my postgraduate willingness to take risks, to point out injustices, and to view the world through a thoughtful, critical lens. Attending Bryn Mawr was my choice, and being a womens college alumna is a privilege. After six years in the service industry, you’d be shocked and amazed by the entitled nature that people assume upon walking into a restaurant, as if servant and server are synonymous terms. From sliding cups across the table onto the floor to scanning fake coupons, I’ve seen it all. As a guide for anyone who missed the memo on how to appropriately conduct oneself in a restaurant environment, this list of do’s and don’ts should suffice as a reference guide. Note: if it is not mentioned in this list, and you question whether it is an asshole move; it’s probably an asshole move. Don’t stay past closing time. Just don’t. The last thing any waitress or waiter wants to do after working eight hours is to sit and watch the only remaining guests slowly enjoy the last remnants of their Combination Dish Number Four. It’s called closing time for a reason, people. In fact, you shouldnt even come fifteen minutes before closing; its just as bad. Do learn how to tip. There are exceptions to this rule only in dramatic circumstances. If your service has been horrible, i.e. food has been dropped on your lap, you haven’t been greeted for an excessive amount of time, or they have forgotten about you altogether, then ten percent may be a suitable tip. However, if nothing has been wrong whatsoever and you realize you ended up spending more than you would have liked, that is not the fault of the employees. With servers earning an average of $4.50 an hour, your tips make up our salary. Don’t make aggressive gestures to gain the servers attention. “AY Miss!” *snaps fingers* “AY Miss!” This, for example, is not okay. It may be easy to forget that servers are not trained animals, but actual people, and you have to remind yourself of that from time to time. Inappropriate gestures may also include: slamming your cup on the table, tugging on a waiter’s apron, clapping your hands in their face, or yelling in general. This seems like it would go without saying, but when it occurs several times in the span of a night, a refresher seems necessary. Do realize that servers aren’t the ones cooking your food. Communication problems happen in real life, and a restaurant is no different. Whether the food is taking too long or your dish didn’t come out just right, it is important to remember that your server is not the one flipping the burgers over the skillet. The kitchen is a another enchilada (pun intended), so before you go off on the middle-man, it would be more appropriate to kindly inquire the reason for your issues with your meal. My listening skills are perfect.Said no language student ever.And theres a good reason for that.Listening skills  are incredibly important, and youll need to  build a foreign language audio library  if you want to reach full fluency.But did you know that there are also  different types of listening practice that focus on different skills?These types of listening are called intensive listening and extensive listening. To get the maximum benefit, language students need to do both types of listening. Think of these two strategies like the crust of a pizza plus all the other ingredients that go on top of it. Without one or the other, you dont have a pizza.So what are these types of listening? How can you put them in your language learning pizza? How can you pair intensive and extensive listening? Or try translating text from your target language into English (or your native language). While listening to it in your target language, you can see what it means in your native language, making it easier to focus on individual words and to see how they correspond to your native language.  This focus on structure and vocabulary is perfect for intensive listening practice.Do guided activities that force you to focus on the basic parts of the language. Audible provides a wide array of options in a number of different languages, including Spanish, French, German, Italian, Russian and Portuguese. Theres also something for all levels of language student.Beginners might try childrens books, which will use a more limited vocabulary. Intermediate students might try short stories, which are less overwhelming than full-length books. Advanced students can dive in with whatever audiobook appeals most. For instance, a beginning German student might try the childrens book Der zweiköpfige Drache  (The Two-headed Dragon). An advanced Spanish student might try a gripping novel like La Chica del Tren  (The Girl on the Train).Watch authentic media. Watching movies, TV and other entertainment is useful for extensive listening.  If you have trouble finding authentic media in your target language, YouTube is a treasure trove of material for virtually any language you might want to learn. Youre only limited by your search terms. You can find Russian movies for kids, romantic Italian movies or virtually anything else you can think of. For instance, you might use a website with audio components (terrific for intensive listening practice) and audiobooks (helpful for extensive listening practice) in order to ensure you practice both intensive and extensive listening.Listen to music. Listening to music  in your target language is fun. Its easy. And you can use it for either intensive or extensive listening, which will probably be music to your ears! If you want to use music for intensive listening, pay careful attention to the lyrics and how they work together. Note the structure of each phrase.
